Shiva Pujan has an incredibly important place in Hindu tradition. As the destroyer and transformer in the Hindu Trimurti, the almighty Lord Shiva represents the ultimate source of energy, creation, and destruction in the universe. A Shiva Pujan is a highly spiritual ritual performed by devotees worldwide to honor and seek blessings from him.
It helps devotees connect with their inner selves and align with the cosmic energies.
Performing Shiv Pujan is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and success.
Lord Shiva is known as "Bholenath," the benevolent one who fulfills the wishes of his devotees.
Start by waking up early and taking a bath. Wear a clean and light-colored cloth. White is usually recommended. Now, begin chanting mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva. The most commonly used mantra is “Om Namah Shivaya.” This particular mantra translates to “I bow to Shiva.” Chanting this mantra is believed to have a purifying effect on the mind and soul.

Thoroughly sweep and clean the place where the puja is to be performed. Place a Shivling or an image or idol of Lord Shiva on a clean cloth or puja platform. Light incense sticks and an oil lamp. These are meant to purify the environment and invite positive energy. Gather and procure Bilva leaves (highly auspicious and loved by Lord Shiva), flowers, fruits, sweets, milk and water. Panchamrit symbolizes purity and devotion. It’s a sacred mixture used in rituals for Shiva Puja. To make Panchamrit, you must get five ingredients: Sugar, Ghee, Honey, Milk, and Curd. A Panchamrit is prepared by mixing these ingredients. Once prepared, offer the Panchamrit to Lord Shiva; once the puja is over, you must distribute it among devotees.
Abhishekam, or Holy Bath, is a crucial step in Shiv Pujan. To perform an Abhishekam, you must acquire all the necessary substances like water, milk, Gangajal, coconut water, curd, ghee, and honey. Once you have these items, pour them over the idol of Lord Shiva to foster a deep connection with him and acquire his blessings.
The offering of fresh fruits and food to Lord Shiva is known as Naivedhya. It is of utmost importance that all food offerings need to be prepared without garlic or onions. By offering Naivedhya, you invite divine blessings and forge a path forward to spiritual balance.
No Pujan ceremony is complete without an Aarti. Performing Aarti helps you drive away negative energy while showing your respect and gratitude to Lord Shiva.
Pradakshinam is the clockwise circumambulation of a divine entity, which in this case is Lord Shiva. Performing Pradakshinam around the idol of Lord Shiva signifies your devotion and reverence to him.
